GT Wings was founded in 2021 by George Thompson, a naval architect and keen sailor. We make Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) for commercial ships, for both, the retrofit market and also for new buildings In 2023 the company won the UK Maritime Award for startup of the year In 2024, the UK Government gave us a grant for GBP3.7m to partner with a UK shipping company and make the wing a reality. Thus our AirWing was born. This chosen ship was classed under BV with Isle of Man registry Our AirWing uses a very new technology that has never been used in the marine industry, a hybrid of a rigid sail and a suction sail, with an additional air jet that is blown using the sucked in air to produce industry leading thrust. We have called this “Jet” technology We completed the Innovate UK funded CMDC4 project in February 2025 and the ship has completed over 8 trans-Atlantic crossings where we have recorded a lot of performance data, which has been handed to Lloyds Register as an independent verifier Findings have shown that the performance is very close to our CFD simulations We are currently finalising the design for our first commercial unit, using all the lessons learnt from the prototype and making it much simpler to manufacture, assemble and operate Our aim is to set up manufacturing and installation hubs in Europe and in Asia, in order to be in line with ship movements and dry-dockings. Additionally, we want to be near the area of new building programs and are already preferred supplier for a Korean yard China is very integral to our long-term strategy.
